OGG to MP3 converter

OGG plays in browsers and on Android, but plenty of players, car stereos and upload forms still want MP3. Pick an OGG and get an MP3 back, made on your own device.

Convert OGG to MP3 here

OGG to MP3, in your browser

Drop a file here or choose one. It stays on this device. Up to 500 MB and 2 hours of sound.

Your browser does the conversion. Open your browser’s network tab while converting to check that the file is not uploaded.

The MP3 encoder is lamejs, open source under the LGPL. See open-source licenses.

The OGG never leaves your device. Your browser decodes it and this page writes the MP3 in memory, with nothing sent to Textspert and no account to create.

Vorbis, Opus or FLAC inside

OGG is a container, a wrapper that can hold different kinds of sound. Most OGG files carry Vorbis, an older open codec common in games and Linux apps, or Opus, a newer one built for speech and music over the internet. A few carry FLAC. Chrome and Edge decode all of them, so they all convert here.

Very old files may hold Speex, a voice codec from the 2000s that current browsers no longer decode. Pick one of those and the page says it couldn’t read the sound, so you never end up with a silent MP3.

Voice notes from WhatsApp and Telegram

The OGG files on most phones are voice messages. WhatsApp and Telegram record them as Opus, and a saved one usually ends in .ogg or .opus. This page takes both endings, so drop the file in as it is. No renaming.

Voice notes are short and small, so a phone handles them fine. The MP3 plays in iTunes, Windows Media Player, most car stereos and the older hardware that never learned OGG.

For the message as text, upload the OGG or OPUS file to Textspert as is. The WhatsApp voice message to text page covers getting the note off your phone.

Converting an OGG, step by step

  1. Choose the file

Pick an .ogg, .oga or .opus file, or drag it onto the box. The limit is 500 MB.

  2. Let it run

The sound is decoded, then encoded as MP3 while a bar fills. Leave the tab open until it’s done.

  3. Grab the MP3

It keeps your file name with .mp3 on the end. Press Convert another file for the next one.

Sound quality after the switch

Both formats throw detail away to save space, so converting one into the other loses a little more. At 128 kbps you’ll barely hear it on speech. A low-bitrate voice note comes out larger as an MP3 without sounding any better, because the encoder can’t add back what the original left out.

Music ripped to OGG at a high bitrate is another story. If you’ll edit or archive it, keep the OGG and make MP3 copies for the devices that need them.

Size, length and browsers

The converter takes files up to 500 MB and 2 hours of sound. Both caps protect your browser’s memory, which holds the decoded audio before the MP3 is written. A two-hour audiobook chapter fits; a whole audiobook in one file may not.

We tested OGG decoding in Chromium, the engine behind Chrome and Edge. If another browser refuses a file, open this page in Chrome and try again. M4A to MP3 and WAV to MP3 handle other audio formats.

OGG to MP3 questions

Is this OGG converter free?

Yes. No account, no watermark and no daily count, because the conversion runs on your own device.

Does it convert OPUS files too?

Yes. An .opus file is Opus sound in an OGG container, same as many .ogg files, so it converts the same way.

Is my voice note sent to a server?

No. The file is read and converted inside this tab, and nothing is uploaded.

What bitrate is the MP3?

128 kbps at 44.1 kHz. There’s no setting to change it.

Can I transcribe an OGG instead?

Yes. Textspert accepts OGG and OPUS uploads. Free covers 3 files a day of up to 60 minutes each, and the transcript labels up to 4 speakers per file.
