MP4 to MP3 converter

Pick an MP4 and get its soundtrack back as an MP3. The conversion runs on your own computer, inside this browser tab, so the video never gets uploaded anywhere.

Convert an MP4 to MP3 here

MP4 to MP3, in your browser

Drop a file here or choose one. It stays on this device. Up to 500 MB and 2 hours of sound.

Your browser does the conversion. Open your browser’s network tab while converting to check that the file is not uploaded.

The MP3 encoder is lamejs, open source under the LGPL. See open-source licenses.

Your MP4 never leaves your device. Your browser reads the sound and makes the MP3 there. You don’t need an account, and the file isn’t sent to us.

How to turn an MP4 into an MP3

  1. Choose the MP4

Click the button or drag the file onto the box. Any size up to 500 MB is fine.

  2. Keep the tab open

A bar tracks the MP3 as it’s written. A long recording keeps your computer busy for a while, so leave the tab alone until it’s done.

  3. Save the MP3

Press Download. You get your video’s name with a new extension.

The MP3: 128 kbps, about 58 MB an hour

The MP3 is 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz, a middle setting. Speech comes out clean and music sounds fine on earbuds and laptop speakers. Stereo video gives you a stereo MP3, and a mono phone clip stays mono.

A movie with 5.1 surround folds down to two channels, and the dialogue from the center speaker stays in the mix, so nobody goes quiet. Picture, subtitles and chapter markers drop out, since an MP3 holds sound and nothing else.

Good reasons to strip the audio from a video

  • A recorded talk or webinar you’d rather hear on a walk, without a video app eating your battery.
  • A screen recording whose narration you want to edit in an audio program.
  • A lecture that shrinks a lot as audio, so it fits on a phone that’s nearly full.
  • A clip for a podcast episode, when your editor wants MP3 and not MP4.

Nothing gets downloaded from YouTube or any other site. The page only reads files already sitting on your computer, so use it on videos you made yourself or have permission to use.

Skip the MP3 if you want the words

Upload the MP4 to Textspert as it is. We transcribe the soundtrack, label up to 4 speakers and hand you text you can edit and export. Video to text has the details, and free transcription shows what the Free plan covers.

Limits and browser support

The cap is 500 MB and 2 hours of sound per file. Your browser decodes the whole file in memory, and past that most phones and plenty of laptops run out of room. Trim a bigger file first, or upload it to us for a transcript.

Chrome and Edge read MP4 from phones, cameras, Zoom and screen recorders. When the browser finds no sound track it understands, the page tells you, so you never download a silent file. MOV, MKV and WEBM live on video to MP3.

MP4 to MP3 questions

Is this MP4 to MP3 converter free?

Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no daily count, because your own computer does the work.

Does my video get uploaded?

No. The MP4 is read and converted inside the tab. Open your browser’s developer tools while it runs and you’ll see no upload.

What bitrate is the MP3?

128 kbps at 44.1 kHz, which suits speech and casual listening. You can’t change it yet.

Why did my file fail?

Usually the video has no audio track, or its audio uses a codec the browser can’t decode. Try Chrome or Edge, or upload the file to Textspert, which accepts more formats.

Can I convert several MP4 files at once?

One at a time. When one finishes, press Convert another file.

Can I convert MP4 to text instead?

Yes, that’s what Textspert is for. Create a free account and upload the MP4. The Free plan covers 3 files a day, each up to 60 minutes long.
