How to convert audio to text
Upload the recording
Drag the file onto the upload page, or pick it from your device. Leave the language on auto, or set it yourself if the first half minute is music or chatter in another language.
Switch on speaker labels
Turn on Recognize speakers when more than one person talks. Up to 4 voices per file get their own label.
Check the text against the audio
Click any word to hear it. Fix names and terms in place; the timestamps stay attached to the words.
Download the transcript
Pick TXT, DOCX, PDF, SRT, VTT, CSV or JSON, depending on where the text goes next.
Audio formats you can upload
| Format | Where it usually comes from |
|---|---|
| MP3 | Podcasts, downloads and most portable recorders |
| M4A | iPhone Voice Memos, GarageBand and many Android apps |
| WAV | Field recorders, audio interfaces and editing software |
| FLAC and AIFF | Archives and music production tools |
| OGG and OPUS | WhatsApp and Telegram voice notes |
| WMA | Older Windows software and dictation devices |
No need to convert first. If another app wants MP3, our free OGG to MP3 and WAV to MP3 converters run on your computer.
What the transcript looks like
- Speaker 1: Can you send me the quote by Thursday?
- Speaker 2: Thursday works. I’ll copy Dana so she can sign off on it.
- Speaker 1: Great. Add the delivery date while you’re at it.
Each line starts when its speaker did, so the transcript doubles as an index of the recording.
Better audio, fewer fixes
- Get the mic close to whoever is talking. A phone a few feet away picks up more room echo than voice.
- Ask people to take turns. Overlapping voices make both halves harder to read back.
- A name that keeps coming up? Fix it once with find and replace.
Speech recognition still stumbles on heavy accents, jargon and people talking over each other. Read through anything you’ll publish, quote or hand to a client.
Audio to text in 100 languages
We transcribe 100 languages and identify the spoken one from the first 30 seconds of speech. Each file gets one language, so set a recording that switches partway to its main language at upload. The languages page lists them all.
For English from a recording in another language, start with Spanish to English translation audio or the general translate audio page.
Where the audio goes and what it costs
Transcription runs on our own GPUs with open speech models. Your recordings are never sent to any AI company, nothing you upload trains a model, and you can delete a file the moment you’re done.
Free covers 3 files a day, each up to 60 minutes and 2 GB, with no card. Hour packs cost 5 hours for $5, 20 hours for $15 or 60 hours for $35, and Unlimited is $20 a month with fair use up to 720 hours a month. Both take files up to 10 hours. Pricing compares them side by side.
Audio to text questions
Can I convert audio to text for free?
Yes. The Free plan gives you 3 files a day, each up to 60 minutes. Free files delete after 30 days unless you remove them sooner.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in a mobile browser, so you can upload and fix transcripts from your phone.
How long can the audio be?
Up to 60 minutes on Free. Hour packs and Unlimited take files up to 10 hours and 5 GB.
Can I make subtitles from an audio file?
Yes. Export SRT or VTT and every caption keeps its timing. The subtitle generator page covers caption length.
What if more than four people talk?
Labels cover up to 4 voices per file. An extra voice folds into one of those labels, and you can move its lines by hand.
What happens to my audio afterward?
Free deletes the audio and transcript after 30 days. Files on a paid plan follow your current plan, so if a subscription ends, Free’s 30-day limit can apply. Files paid from an hour pack stay until you delete them, unless you choose a shorter time. You can delete any file at any time.
