Transcribe a recording

Launching November 2026

Video transcription from the file you already have

Bring the file. There’s no plugin or extension to install.

  • Zoom, Teams and Google Meet

Meetings save as MP4. Meeting transcription shows where each app keeps the file.

  • Your phone

iPhones save MOV or MP4, Android MP4 or, on older phones, 3GP. Upload from the phone’s browser or copy the clip over.

  • Screen recordings

QuickTime, OBS and most recorders save MOV, MP4, MKV or WEBM. A product demo becomes searchable text, each step timestamped.

  • Cameras and old archives

Camcorder MTS and TS files work, and so do old AVI, VOB and WMV files sitting on a backup drive.

Links don’t import. For a YouTube video of your own, download the file first; the YouTube transcript guide shows where.

Video formats Textspert reads

FormatWhere it usually comes from
MP4Zoom, phones, video editors and screen recorders
MOViPhone and QuickTime
MKVOBS and other desktop recording apps
WEBMRecorders that run in a web browser
AVI, WMVOlder Windows software
3GPOlder Android and feature phones
MTS, TSCamcorders and broadcast captures
VOB, RMVB, DivXDVD rips and older downloaded video

Only the audio track gets transcribed. Picture quality doesn’t touch the transcript, so a low-resolution export is fine, and a smaller file keeps you under the 2 GB Free limit.

Transcript, subtitles or data

ExportPick it when
DOCX, PDF or TXTYou want to read, quote or rewrite the words. Turn on timestamps and speaker names to find moments later.
SRT or VTTThe words belong on screen. You choose how many characters each caption holds.
CSV or JSONThe words are headed into a spreadsheet or another program, with start and end times for every segment.

They all come from one transcription, so export a DOCX today and an SRT next week. Caption settings live on the subtitle generator page.

Turn a video into text, step by step

  1. Save the video

Download it from the meeting app, your phone or your editor.

  2. Upload it

Drag the file onto the upload page, with Recognize speakers on if more than one person talks.

  3. Check the words

Play it in the editor. The current word lights up; click any word to jump there.

  4. Download what you need

A document, subtitles or data. Your edits carry into every format.

Long videos and panels with several speakers

A three-hour conference session fits in one upload on a paid plan. Speaker labels work in 3-hour blocks, though, so a longer file shows labels like Speaker 1 (part 2), and one person can change label between blocks. Check names where the parts meet.

Big panels are the other catch. We tell apart up to 4 voices per file, so a fifth panelist gets folded into an existing label, and you move those lines by hand. Speaker identification explains what to expect.

The soundtrack of your video is never sent to any AI company. Transcription runs on our own GPUs, and we don’t train models on your files.

Video to text questions

Can I transcribe a YouTube video?

Only from the file. Links don’t import, so download your own video from YouTube Studio and upload that.

Which video formats work?

MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM, AVI, WMV, 3GP, MTS, TS, VOB and a few older formats.

Does Textspert put captions on my video?

It makes SRT and VTT files, and your video platform or editor adds them as a caption track. The video itself stays untouched.

How long can a video be?

Up to 60 minutes and 2 GB on Free. Paid plans and hour packs take up to 10 hours and 5 GB per file.

Can I transcribe a video that isn’t in English?

Yes. We transcribe 100 languages and pick up the spoken one from the first 30 seconds of speech. The languages page has the full list.

Can I transcribe a Zoom recording?

Yes. Zoom saves recordings as MP4, so download yours and upload it like any other video.

Can I search inside a video’s transcript?

Yes. Find a word in the editor and click it to play from there.
