Descript alternatives when all you need is the text

Descript is a video and podcast editor that runs on a transcript. Great if you edit media. If you only want the words, you’re paying for a suite you never open. These six tools sit closer to that job.

Signs you’ve outgrown Descript for transcripts

  • You never touch the timeline. You upload, fix a few names and export.
  • Your files run long. Descript Free counts 60 media minutes a month, so one long interview can use the whole allowance.
  • You record in more languages than Descript covers. Descript lists 25 transcription languages; Textspert transcribes 100.
  • You want data, not a project file: CSV and JSON with timing for each word.
  • Your volume swings, and on Descript’s monthly plan a quiet month costs the same as a busy one.

Six alternatives and who each one suits

  • Textspert

An editor built for fixing text: click a word to hear it, type over a mistake, keep the timestamps. The 60-hour pack works out to about $0.58 an hour.

  • Otter

For meetings, with notes during the call. Otter Pro includes 1,200 minutes and 90 minutes per conversation.

  • Rev

When a few files need a human pass. Rev’s human service is $1.99 a minute.

  • Sonix

Sonix Core is $25 a month for 5 hours; extra hours on a subscription cost $10 each. It exports DOCX, PDF, TXT, SRT and VTT.

  • Happy Scribe

When subtitles in many languages matter more than price. Happy Scribe Pro is $29 a month, or $19 a month billed yearly, for 600 minutes with no length limit per recording.

  • Riverside’s web tool

Free, and fine for a single narrator. Riverside takes MP3, WAV, MP4 and MOV there and exports TXT and SRT, but every voice on mixed audio lands under one speaker.

Reasons to keep Descript

If you cut episodes or videos, Descript’s big idea is still the best one here: delete a word and the media follows. Its paid plans take far bigger files too, from 10 GB on Hobbyist to 50 GB on Business, which matters for raw footage.

It detects more than the 4 voices we label, so big roundtables are easier there. Plenty of people run both: Descript for the episode that ships, something lighter for the interviews behind it.

What a few common months cost

  • One 2-hour webinar a month is more than Descript Free’s hour. A 5-hour Textspert pack is $5 and lasts 12 months.
  • Eight hours of interviews in March, then nothing for a while? Descript Hobbyist is $24 for each month you stay subscribed. A 20-hour Textspert pack costs $15, paid one time.
  • 30 hours every month puts you on Descript Creator at $35 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly. Textspert Unlimited is $20, or $10 a month billed yearly.

Packs never renew. Cancel Unlimited any time and keep it to the end of the period you paid for.

Training terms, side by side

Descript’s terms let it use what you put into and get out of its AI features “to train, improve, and develop its models and technologies” unless you opt out in its app settings. Rev’s terms allow speech-to-text content to be used “for continuous training” of its models, though its help center says Enterprise and Unlimited customers can ask to opt out. Riverside’s privacy policy says content data may be used for training, with an opt-out only for business customers under a written agreement.

We have no opt-out because there’s nothing to opt out of. Speech recognition and AI run on our own GPUs, your audio and transcripts are never sent to any AI company, and we never train on your files. More on private transcription.

Descript alternative questions

Is there a free Descript alternative for transcription?

Textspert Free covers 3 files a day of up to 60 minutes each, with speaker labels and every export. Riverside’s separate web tool is free too, but treats every voice as one speaker.

Can Textspert edit video by editing text?

No. We edit transcripts and make SRT and VTT subtitle files, not audio or video. Keep Descript for that part.

Which alternative is cheapest per hour?

Here, Textspert’s 60-hour pack, at about $0.58 an hour ($35 in total). Sonix charges $10 per extra hour on a subscription, and Rev’s AI tier is $0.25 a minute, which is $15 an hour.

Will my Descript source files upload?

Probably. We read MP4, MOV, WAV, M4A, MP3, MKV, WEBM and most other formats. Free files can be 60 minutes and 2 GB; paid files up to 10 hours and 5 GB.

Do I give up speaker detection?

You get up to 4 labeled voices per file, which you can rename, merge and reassign. Descript detects more, so it wins on big panels.

Can I export subtitles for my editor?

Yes. Export SRT or VTT with a maximum line length; the subtitle generator page has details.
