Launching November 2026

Convert video to MP3

Drop in a video and keep only its sound, as an MP3. MP4, MOV, MKV, WEBM and 3GP from phones, cameras and screen recorders work; AVI doesn’t. The file never crosses the internet.

Turn a video file into MP3

video to MP3, in your browser

Drop a file here or choose one. It stays on this device. Up to 500 MB and 2 hours of sound.

Your browser does the conversion. Open your browser’s network tab while converting to check that the file is not uploaded.

The MP3 encoder is lamejs, open source under the LGPL. See open-source licenses.

The video never leaves your device. It is decoded by your browser and turned into an MP3 on your machine, with no account needed and no copy kept by Textspert.

Which video formats work

Tested in Chromium. Safari and Firefox read a slightly different list, and the page tells you when a file can’t be read.
FormatWhere it usually comes fromWorks here
MP4Phones, Zoom, most cameras and editorsYes
MOViPhone and Mac screen recordingsYes
MKVRecording software such as OBSYes, in Chrome and Edge
WEBMBrowser recorders and some web appsYes
3GPOlder phonesYes
AVIOlder cameras and Windows softwareNo, the browser can’t decode it

A file from that last row can still go to Textspert for a transcript. Uploads go through a full media toolkit on Textspert’s servers, not your browser, so AVI is fine there. You get text back, not an MP3.

Three steps from video to audio

  1. Pick or drop the video

One file at a time, up to 500 MB.

  2. Watch the progress bar

The browser reads the sound track first, then the MP3 encoder runs. Leave the tab open meanwhile.

  3. Download

The MP3 takes the video’s file name. Convert another whenever you like.

Sound quality and file size

Every MP3 comes out at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Video audio is already compressed, so a higher bitrate would only make a bigger file, with no detail coming back. Plan on about 1 MB of MP3 a minute, roughly 58 MB an hour.

Two channels stay two channels. Home video with surround sound mixes down to stereo, center channel included, so voices don’t vanish.

Converting video straight from a phone

Open this page on your phone and pick a clip from the camera roll. An iPhone may hand the browser a copy first, which takes a moment on a long video. Android’s file picker puts recent videos at the top.

Phones have less memory to spare than laptops, so a clip of a few minutes is the sweet spot. Move a long recording to a computer and convert it in Chrome or Edge, where the same page has far more room.

Use it on your own videos

There’s no link box, and the page never fetches anything from video sites. It reads files already on your computer. Ripping a soundtrack you don’t own and sharing it can break copyright law, so stick to your own footage or clips you’re allowed to use.

When a transcript is the real goal

For the words spoken in the video, skip the MP3 and upload the video itself. You get a transcript with timestamps and speaker labels, plus SRT and VTT subtitles. Video to text explains the steps, and the subtitle generator covers captions.

MP4 to MP3 and M4A to MP3 each get a page of their own, with tips for that one format.

Video to MP3 questions

Can I convert a MOV from my iPhone?

Yes. iPhone videos and screen recordings are MOV files with AAC sound, which Chrome and Edge decode.

Why does an AVI file fail?

Browsers don’t ship a decoder for most AVI audio. Convert it with a desktop program, or upload it to Textspert for a transcript.

Is there a watermark or a limit per day?

Neither. Your computer does the work, so we have nothing to ration.

Does it work on a phone?

Small files usually do. Long videos fail more often there, because a phone has less memory than a laptop.

Can it download a video from a link?

No. It only converts files you already have on your device.
