SRT to VTT converter

Web video players want WebVTT, and plenty of editors hand you SRT. Pick an SRT file and download the same captions as a .vtt, converted on your device.

Convert SRT subtitles to VTT

SRT to VTT, in your browser

Drop a file here or choose one. It stays on this device. Up to 500 MB.

Your browser does the conversion. Open your browser’s network tab while converting to check that the file is not uploaded.

Your subtitle file never leaves your device. It is read as text in this tab and rewritten there, so no account is needed and Textspert never sees the captions.

What changes between SRT and VTT

Part of the fileSRTWebVTT
First lineThe first cue numberThe word WEBVTT
Timestamps00:01:02,500 (comma)00:01:02.500 (period)
Cue numbersRequiredOptional; written here as 1, 2, 3 in order
StylingBold, italic, underline, font colorBold, italic, underline, plus CSS classes

Commas become periods, the header goes on top, and bold, italic and underline survive. Font color tags and position codes like {\an8} have no VTT equivalent, so they go and the words stay. An ampersand or angle bracket inside a line gets escaped, the way VTT requires. Cues are numbered 1, 2, 3 in file order, so an SRT with gaps or repeats in its numbering comes out clean.

The same caption in both formats

Sample: the twelfth cue of a file as SRT, then as WebVTT
  1. SRT12
  2. SRT00:04:17,250 --> 00:04:19,900
  3. SRTWe shipped the <font color="yellow">first</font> batch on Friday.
  4. VTT12
  5. VTT00:04:17.250 --> 00:04:19.900
  6. VTTWe shipped the first batch on Friday.

Apart from the dropped font tag, the text and timing don’t move. Your corrections survive, and so do your line breaks, which decide where a caption wraps on screen. A file you’ve already checked line by line is safe to convert.

Where you need a VTT file

A caption track on your own site’s HTML video element has to be WebVTT. Many web players and course platforms built on that element list .vtt as their caption format. Video hosts that take either format can show VTT styling your player supports.

For a desktop editor or a TV that wants SRT, go the other way with VTT to SRT.

Broken cues get a line number

Hand-edited SRT files often carry a typo in a timestamp, a missing arrow or a cue that ends before it starts. Each one gets listed with its cue number and line, so you can fix it in a text editor and convert again. Every clean cue is in the download.

Windows line endings and the invisible byte-order mark some editors put at the start of a file are handled for you.

Text saved in an old Windows code page is beyond repair here. If accented letters already look like é in your text editor, the damage happened before the conversion. Reopen the SRT as Windows-1252 or Latin-1, save it as UTF-8, then convert that copy.

No subtitles yet

Upload the video and Textspert writes the SRT and VTT for you. Fix any word in the editor, then export captions with a maximum line length that fits your player. The subtitle generator page shows how, and video to text covers transcripts.

SRT to VTT questions

Does converting change my timings?

No. Every start and end time carries over to the millisecond. Only the separator changes.

What happens to a broken cue?

It’s listed under the download with its cue number, line and the reason, and it stays out of the VTT until you fix it.

Are speaker names kept?

Yes. Whatever text the SRT line holds, names included, ends up in the VTT line.

Is there a size limit?

Subtitle files are tiny, so in practice no. The page takes anything up to the same cap as the audio tools.

My player still shows nothing. What now?

Check that the track element points at the .vtt file and that your server sends it as text/vtt. A wrong content type is the usual reason a valid file doesn’t show.
