VTT to SRT converter

Plenty of desktop editors, media players and TVs still read only SRT. Pick a .vtt file and get a clean SRT back, with cues numbered from 1 and the styling SRT can’t show stripped out.

Convert a VTT file to SRT

VTT to SRT, in your browser

Drop a file here or choose one. It stays on this device. Up to 500 MB.

Your browser does the conversion. Open your browser’s network tab while converting to check that the file is not uploaded.

The caption file never leaves your device. It is converted as text inside this page, with no account needed and nothing sent to Textspert.

What SRT can’t carry

WebVTT can place a caption on screen, set its alignment, add notes and attach CSS classes. SRT has none of that. The words, the timing, and bold, italic and underline all come through. These five things don’t make the trip.

 • Cue settings after the timestamp, like align:start or position:10%.
 • NOTE, STYLE and REGION blocks.
 • Class and language tags around words.
 • Karaoke-style timestamps inside a line.
 • Cue identifiers, since SRT numbers cues 1, 2, 3 instead.

Speaker voice tags

A VTT line can mark who’s talking with a voice tag. SRT has no such tag, so the name moves to the front of the line as plain text, like “Maya: Hello and welcome.” Viewers still see who’s speaking, and the name isn’t thrown away.

Entities get the same care. VTT spells an ampersand as & and a less-than sign as <, and SRT players would show those codes literally. They turn back into the real characters, so the SRT reads the way the VTT looked on screen.

Sample: one cue before and after
 1. VTT00:01.000 --> 00:03.500 align:start
 2. VTT<v Maya>Hello & welcome.
 3. SRT00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500
 4. SRTMaya: Hello & welcome.

Who needs SRT

Video editors import caption files as SRT for burning in or exporting. Media players and smart TVs load an SRT that sits next to the video file. Plenty of social platforms and archives ask for SRT on upload.

For a web player, SRT to VTT goes the other way. To strip the timing and keep only the words, use SRT to text.

Where VTT files usually come from

Meeting apps, video hosts and online course tools tend to export captions as WebVTT, since that’s what browsers play. Zoom’s cloud recordings, for example, can come with a VTT transcript file. Those files work fine on the web and feel awkward everywhere else, which is where this page earns its keep.

Auto-generated VTT often chops one sentence into many short cues and adds positioning to every line. After conversion you get the same short cues as SRT. To read the text as a document, run that SRT through SRT to text with paragraphs switched on.

If part of the file won’t convert

A file that doesn’t start with WEBVTT, or a cue with a mistyped timestamp, gets reported under the download with its line number. Good cues still convert, so one typo doesn’t cost you the whole file. Fix the listed lines in any text editor and run it again.

Starting from scratch, upload the video to Textspert and export SRT or VTT straight from the transcript. The subtitle generator shows how.

VTT to SRT questions

Why are my cue numbers different?

SRT needs cues numbered in order from 1, so VTT identifiers like “intro” become plain numbers.

Where did my caption positions go?

SRT has no way to place a caption, so position and alignment settings are dropped. The text and timing don’t change.

Do accented letters survive?

Yes. The SRT is saved as UTF-8, so accents, emoji and non-Latin scripts come through.

Is the file uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in the browser tab you have open.

Can I edit the captions after converting?

Yes. An SRT is plain text, so any text editor works. Keep the blank line between cues and the arrow in each timing line.
