Your MOV never leaves your device. The browser’s built-in audio engine decodes the sound track and the MP3 is written in memory, so Textspert never receives a copy and you don’t sign up for anything.

Where MOV files come from

MOV is Apple’s QuickTime format. iPhones record it, QuickTime Player saves screen recordings in it, and plenty of cameras and editing apps export it. The sound inside is nearly always AAC, the codec in MP4 and M4A files, and Chrome and Edge decode it without trouble.

The picture can be H.264 or the HEVC that newer iPhones default to. Only the sound gets decoded, so it doesn’t matter. Uncompressed PCM sound converts too. Apple Lossless (ALAC) is the one exception we found: Chrome refuses it, and the page tells you before anything is written.

Getting a video off your iPhone first

The file has to be on the device you’re using. On a Mac, AirDrop the clip, or select it in Photos and choose File, then Export, then Export Unmodified Original, which keeps the MOV exactly as recorded. On Windows, copy it across with a cable or download it from iCloud Photos in a browser.

It also runs in the iPhone’s own browser, but long videos fail more often on a phone. Move those to a computer.

What ends up in the MP3

You get a 128 kbps MP3 at 44.1 kHz, about 1 MB a minute, so a ten-minute clip lands near 10 MB. Stereo stays stereo, and mono stays mono.

The picture, any captions, and the date and place your phone stamped on the video stay behind.

When you want the words instead of the sound

Does it work with HEVC videos from a newer iPhone?

Yes. The video codec doesn’t matter, because only the sound is decoded, and iPhone sound is AAC.

Why did my MOV fail?

Most often the sound is Apple Lossless, which Chrome and Edge can’t decode, or the file has no sound track at all. Export it again with AAC sound, or upload it to Textspert for a transcript; uploads don’t depend on the browser.

Can I get a WAV instead of an MP3?

Not from a MOV on this page. The MP4 to WAV converter writes WAV files from MP4 video.
