MP4 to WAV converter

Pick an MP4 and get its sound as a WAV, the uncompressed format audio editors and lots of older tools expect. Your computer does the conversion in this tab.

Convert an MP4 to WAV

MP4 to WAV, in your browser

Drop a file here or choose one. It stays on this device. Up to 500 MB and 2 hours of sound.

Your browser does the conversion. Open your browser’s network tab while converting to check that the file is not uploaded.

The MP4 never leaves your device. The browser decodes the sound and this page writes the WAV in memory on your machine, so there is no account and Textspert receives nothing.

What kind of WAV you get

The file is plain PCM WAV, with 16-bit samples at 44.1 kHz, the same settings as a music CD. Stereo video gives a stereo WAV, and mono stays mono. Surround tracks mix down to two channels with the dialogue kept in.

Phones and cameras often record sound at 48 kHz. The browser resamples it to 44.1 kHz while decoding, which you won’t hear. If a video editor needs 48 kHz to match the picture, convert the WAV again in that editor.

Sizes follow from 44,100 samples a second at 2 bytes each, per channel.

Why pick WAV over MP3

  • Audio editors such as Audacity, Reaper and Pro Tools open WAV without a second round of compression, so cuts and effects start from clean samples.
  • Some samplers, phone systems and older programs accept only WAV.
  • Speech research and voice tools often ask for WAV input.
  • Editing and exporting from WAV never stacks one lossy format on another.

WAV can’t bring back detail, though. The sound in an MP4 was compressed when it was recorded, and the WAV is an exact, larger copy of what survived. To listen or share, MP4 to MP3 gives you a file about a tenth the size.

MP4 to WAV, step by step

  1. Select the video

Click the button or drop the MP4 on the box. It can be up to 500 MB and 2 hours of sound.

  2. Wait for the WAV

The page decodes the sound, then writes the WAV while a bar fills. There’s no encoder to download, so this part goes quickly.

  3. Download it

The WAV keeps your video’s name, with .wav on the end.

Leave room on your disk

A WAV is far bigger than the MP4 it came from, because nothing in it is compressed. An hour of stereo sound makes a WAV of about 635 MB, however small the video was. Check your free space before converting a long file, and expect a phone to struggle near the limit.

If the WAV is only a step toward a transcript, skip it. Textspert reads MP4 directly, and MP4 to transcript shows what you get back. Other video formats can become MP3 on video to MP3.

MP4 to WAV questions

Is this MP4 to WAV converter free?

Yes. No sign-up and no watermark. It runs on your own computer, so there’s nothing for us to charge for.

Is my MP4 uploaded?

No. The video is opened and converted in this browser tab, and no request carries it anywhere.

Can I choose 24-bit or 48 kHz?

Not yet. Every WAV is 16-bit at 44.1 kHz, which every editor and player accepts.

Why is the WAV so much bigger than the MP4?

An MP4 stores its sound compressed, usually a megabyte or two a minute. WAV stores every sample as it is, about 10.6 MB a minute in stereo.

Does it work with MOV or MKV?

This page is set up for MP4. For MOV or MKV sound as MP3, use MOV to MP3 or MKV to MP3.

Can I get a transcript of the MP4 instead?

Yes. Upload the MP4 to Textspert. Free covers 3 files a day of up to 60 minutes, with up to 4 speakers labeled per file.
