Turn voice memos into text
Upload a voice memo or a saved voice message and get the words back as text you can edit, search and share. Or record straight from your browser on the upload page. Free files can run up to 60 minutes.
Transcribe a recording
Launching November 2026
Getting a memo off an iPhone
Open Voice Memos
Find the recording in your list and tap it.
Share it
Tap the three dots or the share button, then choose Save to Files, or AirDrop it to your Mac.
Upload the M4A
Voice Memos saves M4A, which uploads as it is. Safari on the phone works too.
A memo longer than 60 minutes won’t fit on Free in one piece. Trim it in Voice Memos first, or use an hour pack, which takes files up to 10 hours.
What people do with transcribed memos
Ideas on the go
Record an idea on a walk, then find it next month by searching for a word you remember saying.
Field notes
Inspectors and reporters talk through what they see. The transcript is the first draft of the write-up.
Messages worth keeping
A long voice note with an address, a list or instructions is easier to act on as text you can copy.
Dictated drafts
Talk through an email, a blog post or a chapter, then tidy it in the editor. No blank page.
An AI summary turns a rambling memo into a short summary and action items, handy when you said a to-do list out loud and only half remember it.
Android recorder apps
Most Android recorder apps save M4A, MP3, AAC or OGG. Tap Share or Export on the recording, save it somewhere your browser can reach, and upload.
If your recorder has a quality setting, pick the higher one for meetings or lectures. An hour of speech still lands well under the 2 GB Free limit. More on audio types is on the MP3 to text page.
WhatsApp and Telegram voice notes
Chat app voice notes usually come out as OGG or OPUS files. Both upload as they are, with nothing to convert.
- WhatsApp: long-press the voice note, then Share or Forward it to yourself. Exporting a chat with media includes its voice notes too.
- Telegram: save the voice message from Telegram Desktop, or export the chat along with its media.
Only transcribe messages you have the right to use. Whoever sent a voice note may not expect to see it written out in a document.
Or skip the phone and record on the upload page
The upload page records from your computer’s or phone’s microphone, with the same 60-minute limit on Free and 10 hours on paid plans and hour packs.
Short memos add up. Free covers 3 files a day, so if you dictate ten notes a day, an hour pack gets you past the daily cap. 5 hours costs $5 and lasts 12 months, and the pricing page has the other options.
Your memos are never sent to any AI company, and the private transcription page explains our training and deletion promises.
Voice memo questions
Does it read iPhone voice memos?
Yes. They’re M4A files, and M4A uploads directly.
Can I transcribe WhatsApp voice messages?
Yes, once you save the voice note as a file. WhatsApp uses OGG or OPUS audio, and both are accepted.
Can I upload from my phone?
Yes. Open Textspert in your phone’s browser and pick the file from your device.
How long can a memo be?
Up to 60 minutes on Free, and up to 10 hours with an hour pack or a paid plan.
Can I search all my memos?
Yes. Search looks for words across all your files, and tags help you group related memos.
Does it handle memos with background noise?
It does its best, but traffic, wind and music make mistakes more likely. Hold the phone closer next time, and check noisy parts in the editor.
Can I get a summary of a long memo?
Yes. One click drafts a summary, chapters and action items, and Free includes 3 AI summaries a day.
